Artistic Residency

Post-natural and other ecologies

The Museum of Tomorrow's Artistic Residency Program, carried out by the Laboratory of Tomorrow's Activities (LAA), is a platform for experimentation, innovation and debate.

About the program

Over the course of 9 weeks, the artist residency program promotes exchanges between contemporary artists, scientists, curators, and philosophers with the aim of enriching artistic research supported by the interdisciplinary approach of art, science, and technology.

Open to residents from all over Brazil with at least three years of experience in production, the program will include dedicated curatorial support and an exchange with a group of specialized mentors. Over the course of four weeks, residents will have a dedicated space to develop their projects, which will be publicly exhibited at the end of the residency.

The program will feature:

  • Professional development activities, including research presentations, portfolio readings, and dedicated mentoring;
  • Guided visits to museums, galleries, independent spaces, artists' studios and social organizations within Rio de Janeiro;
  • Meetings with artists, curators, scientists, academics and other researchers to promote research exchanges, in presentation, conversation, event and café formats;
  • Informal exchanges between residents and the artistic circuit.

About the Post-natural and Other Ecologies edition

As a way to examine the relationships between nature, culture, technology, and fiction, this year's residency chooses the theme: Post-natural and Other Ecologies. The proposal draws direct reference to fields of philosophical, ecological, and artistic study: while, on the one hand, the term "post-natural" was coined to describe organisms that have been intentionally and hereditarily altered by humans, on the other hand, in philosophy, post-natural studies address a framework of thought that invites us to destabilize the nature/culture binary, creating an inclusive and open space from which to discuss new approaches to ecology.

By blurring the boundaries between science, aesthetics, ethics, and politics, the residency proposes an intertwined and dynamic interdisciplinary perspective, where materialities, forms of life, technologies, and cultures are infinitely interconnected.

Thus, artists are invited whose research proposes speculative ecologies; new ways, biological or artificial, of inhabiting the world; interactions between culture and nature; listening to traditional ecological knowledge; and artistic practices that rethink our relationship with the environments we inhabit.

Steps

The residency is divided into 5 moments:

  • Project submission, analysis and selection of residents;
  • 5 weeks of online monitoring for the 5 selected artists;
  • 4 weeks in-person at the LAA makerspace, where the 5 selected artists will have the opportunity to explore, collaborate and discuss the relationship between art, nature, technology and society;
  • Actions open to the public during the in-person residency period, proposed jointly by the curators and the residents
  • A public presentation of the research and work, in a format and date to be decided by the Museum.

Curatorial guidelines

As a way of examining the relationships between nature, culture, technology and fiction, this year's residency chooses the theme: Post-natural and other ecologies.

Postnaturalism is the theory of the postnatural, a term coined to describe organisms that have been intentionally and hereditarily altered by humans. In philosophy, postnatural studies is a framework of thought that invites us to destabilize the nature-culture binomial, creating an inclusive and open space from which to discuss new approaches to ecology.

By blurring the boundaries between science, aesthetics, ethics, and politics, the residency proposes an intertwined and dynamic interdisciplinary perspective, where materialities, forms of life, technologies, and cultures are infinitely interconnected.

Thus, artists are invited whose research proposes speculative ecologies; new ways, biological or artificial, of inhabiting the world; interactions between culture and nature; listening to traditional ecological knowledge; and scientific-artistic practices that rethink our relationship with the environments we inhabit.

NOTICE FOR ARTISTIC RESIDENCE AT THE MUSEUM OF TOMORROW 2025

Check the criteria for participation below.

1. PRESENTATION

The Museum of Tomorrow is now accepting applications for the Museum of Tomorrow 2025 Artistic Residency – Post-natural and other ecologies.

The residency program will be held over nine weeks in 2025 and is aimed at artists and/or art producers, Brazilian or resident in Brazilian territory for at least 2 (two) years, with proof of artistic work for at least 3 (three) years.

The 2025 edition will select 5 (five) artists and/or art producers interested in the intersection between art, ecology, technology and science, with 1 (one) participant being a mandatory resident of the city of Rio de Janeiro, 1 (one) participant residing in the Southeast Region, 1 (one) participant residing in the North Region, 1 (one) participant residing in the Northeast Region and 1 (one) participant residing in the Central-West or South Region.

The program encourages creative practices and artistic expressions linked to technologies, whether traditional or contemporary, that work in a multidisciplinary way on the relationship between nature and culture.

During the Artistic Residency, artists and/or art producers over 18 years of age who work in the following areas will be selected: Visual Arts (painting, sculpture, digital art, audiovisual, photography, installation, immersive art, video games, among others), architecture, biodesign, philosophy, physics, new media and other scientific fields.

2. POST-NATURAL EDITION AND OTHER ECOLOGIES

Following the general guidelines of the Museum of Tomorrow, the Museum of Tomorrow 2025 Artistic Residency program offers its research and innovation platform to help artists develop research that examines the relationships between nature, culture, technology, and fiction. Titled "Post-natural and Other Ecologies," the proposal draws direct reference to fields of philosophical, ecological, and artistic study: while, on the one hand, the term "post-natural" was coined to describe organisms that have been intentionally and hereditarily altered by humans, on the other hand, in philosophy, post-natural studies address a framework of thought that invites us to destabilize the nature/culture binary, creating an inclusive and open space from which to discuss new approaches to ecology.

In the artistic field, these foundations serve as a link to group artistic propositions that examine the relationship between artistic practice and ecology—whether concrete or speculative. Thus, we invite artists and/or art producers to consider the following questions:

How can the stories of non-human beings serve as a reflection to rethink our ways of being in the world?

How does the interaction between nature and culture question the classification of what is or is not natural?

How do the violence suffered by plants, fungi, minerals and animals mirror or expand the notion of violence suffered by human groups?

Artists and/or art producers are invited to participate if they wish to deepen research that proposes speculative ecologies; new ways, biological or artificial, of inhabiting the world; interactions between culture and nature; listening to traditional ecological knowledge; and scientific-artistic practices that rethink our relationship with the environments we inhabit.
