A stroll through the Hacked River

"Rolé pelo Rio Hackeado," the Museum of Tomorrow's new exhibition, proposes the empowerment of cities by restless people, known as "hackers." The challenge aims to inspire each visitor to explore the places where they live, to reflect and initiate sustainable actions, from planting a flower seedling to transforming degraded urban areas, for example. The public will be able to visit starting October 12th.

The collective creation of Estúdio M’Baraká and Laboratório de Atividades do Amanhã, “Rolé pelo Rio Hackeado” (Roll Through the Hacked River) uses mechanical models depicting the movement of the neighborhoods of Lapa, Urca, and Rocinha, works produced by Luiz Oliveira, a mechanic, welder, and resident of the Mangueira community; an urban garden to represent the interventions carried out in the city’s various construction sites; graffiti with projections; and an area that will symbolize the Baile Charme de Madureira, an example of a transformed creative territory; among other environments.

Also noteworthy are the interactive installations (totems) where visitors can create an "affective diagnosis" of their own city. After choosing one of Rio de Janeiro's 160 official neighborhoods, visitors can suggest improvements to the spaces, including more vegetable gardens, color, art, a bike path, a meeting point, etc. Throughout the exhibition, historical content from the Rolé Carioca project is presented, combined with ideas and case studies of city transformation through the hands of users themselves—those who live there know how to maximize its use.

According to Marcela Sabino, director of LAA, the choice of the term hacker is intended to bring to light the idea of the evolution of a system, the discovery of new possibilities in computers or even in squares, cities, avenues, among others.
