AWKWARD

In the DeepFake Rhythm

On Wednesday, July 16th, at 4 PM, we inaugurated the arena of the new innovation space, located in Zona Fogo. The purpose of this space is to be a meeting point for exchange and transformation, igniting a collective flame that questions and drives new ways of living in the face of the various social challenges we face.

To fuel one of the most complex and urgent discussions of the digital age: the impact of deepfakes on society, we invited Nina da Hora — a computer scientist, researcher, and one of the most attentive voices on the relationships between technology, justice, and inequality in Brazil. Nina, who also designed an installation for the innovation space, gets into the fast-paced rhythm of deepfakes — videos and audio manipulated by artificial intelligence, capable of imitating faces, voices, and expressions with a disturbing degree of realism. While they once seemed like science fiction, today they are part of our daily lives — from humorous memes featuring celebrities like Beyoncé and Lady Gaga, to nonexistent faces, such as that of the fictional talk show featuring Marisa Maiô, to non-consensual pornographic content and political manipulations that put words that were never uttered in the mouths of leaders and authorities.
