Artistic Residency

It is a platform that supports artists in developing their research and artistic projects across different media, grounded in the concepts of art, technology, and diverse forms of knowledge. The residency is presented annually by the Lab.

The program promotes interdisciplinary exchanges between contemporary artists and scientists, philosophers, and technologists, aiming to overcome the barriers between the fields of art, science, technology, and social studies. As a methodological approach, each year the residency program welcomes residents from all over Brazil for a period of curatorial mentorship and exchange with a group of mentors around the world and cultural and historical spaces in Rio de Janeiro. Over four weeks, residents will have dedicated space to develop their projects, which will ultimately be exhibited in an exhibition format at the Museum of Tomorrow.

on

A program that connects imagination, knowledge, and the future.

The Museum of Tomorrow's artistic residency is a space for creation and experimentation that proposes an essential dialogue between contemporary art, science, and technology. More than a program, it is an experience of collective exchange and invention aimed at the constant re-creation and renewal of ways of thinking about our future and well-being. The residency seeks to cross disciplinary boundaries and provoke new ways of thinking and acting on the present. The program brings together artists, scientists, philosophers, and technologists in a collaborative process that challenges the traditional separations between artistic creation and scientific research. Our purpose is to create a fertile ground where ideas meet, transform, and generate new perspectives.

how it works

Over four intense weeks, residents from different regions of Brazil participate in an immersion program that combines curatorial guidance, mentorship, and exchanges with various artists, researchers, and cultural and museum spaces in Rio de Janeiro, according to the theme proposed for the residency year. The program is structured around four main axes:

  1. Curatorial mentorship — ongoing guidance for the conceptual and artistic development of projects.
  2. Mentorship — meetings with experts and researchers from various parts of the world.
  3. Mediation — visits and connections with institutions, territories, and cultural agents in Rio de Janeiro.
  4. Dedicated infrastructure — workspace and technical support for experimentation and production.

expectation

The cycle culminates in a structured research project, in which the residents present the works and processes developed during the program. The public presentation becomes an invitation for the public to experience new ways of thinking about the relationship between art, science, and technology, as well as to connect with the resident artists of that year. Not all works necessarily translate into a museum exhibition; they may take on other formats for sharing.
